Vulcania Auvergne

Vulcania is a co-financed EU project which, by means of natural resources in the form of ore, minerals and related activities, aims to successfully contribute to a structural development of the mineral and mining sector in the northern part of the Norrland region, a transition from being engaged in a single type of production to becoming suppliers with enhanced knowledge providing qualified services.

This goal will be achieved through growth of the knowledge, competence and service sectors through Vulcania-organized training and field courses, field trips, workshops etc. and Vulcania-initiated research projects within scientific fields related to ore geology and environmental geology.

Equal opportunities and environmental concern are of vital importance in these operations.

Malå Vulcania is an EU funded project with the objective of successfully developing the northern part of the Norrland region, by exploiting the ore and mineral resources of the province.

This goal will be achieved through growth of the knowledge, competence and service sectors through Vulcania-organized training and field courses, field trips, workshops etc. and Vulcania-initiated research projects within scientific fields related to ore geology and environmental geology.

In spite of the fact that Sweden is the leading mining country in Europe, key persons must be recruited from abroad. Vulcania is a project aiming to initiate/perform geosciences training and research in order to increase the competence in Sweden regarding prospecting, mining and mining environment in a long-term perspective.

Vulcania will establish important facilities for research purposes and initiate the research and training required in order to develop the mining industry, one of the cornerstones of the inland economy. Training and research will take place mainly in the Norrbotten and Västerbotten counties, which constitute one of the most promising ore provinces in Europe.

The Vulcania project began in 2001 and its registered office is located in Malå in the Västerbotten county, where the Geological Survey of Sweden’s national archive of ore geological data and the national drill core archive, containing more than 3,000,000 metres of drill core, are also situated, resources that are very important to the project idea. (Three million metres is equivalent to the distance between Malå and Barcelona.)

Equal opportunities and environmental concern will be of vital importance in these operations.

The municipality of Malå initiated the Vulcania project. It is co-funded by the EU Structural Funds, with a budget amounting to approx. SEK 180m over a six-year period. Financial means are granted for the first two years. The municipality of Malå is the project owner of Vulcania. The project organisation was presented in the Vulcania Newsletter of February 2002 and includes the non-profit association Vulcania, which serves as a reference group, the Scientific Council, established to appraise the research proposals submitted to Vulcania and finally, a “Financial Council” has been added to the organisation.

The Scientific Council was recruited internationally and comprises recognized Swedish and foreign researchers, who, through their competence and engagement, will guarantee the quality of the sub-projects in the programme. The Council was presented in the Vulcania Newsletter of February 2002.

The Funders' Consultative Body was created to ensure that planned board decisions are consistent with the funding regulations of the EU, County Administrative Boards, County Councils, County Labour Boards and the municipalities, and to maintain a continuous and informal communication with the funders’ representatives. These persons were also presented in the Vulcania Newsletter of February 2002.

Vulcania is to function as a fieldwork centre for research at an international as well as national level and for training within the following disciplines: Ore geology, bedrock geology, hydrogeology, geophysics, geochemistry, geodesy, mineralogy, etc.

Objective:

• Create more effective ways of finding more profitable ore deposits in the province.
• Facilitate recruitment for the industry.
• Increase public understanding for and knowledge of the importance of geoscience for continued economic growth.

Target group:

Students and researchers at Swedish and European universities/higher education institutes pursuing training or research within areas related to prospecting, mining and mining environment. Other target groups include prospecting/ mining companies and the citizens in the region.

Projects

Events

One of Vulcania’s goals is to put Sweden on the EU map of geoscience. Therefore, Vulcania will arrange scientific conferences, training courses, lectures, thematic exhibitions, expeditions and field courses, directed to the public as well as professionals.

The part directed to the public will promote understanding of the impact geoscience has on regional economic growth, while the part directed to professionals will increase students’ interest in geological studies and stimulate interdisciplinary cooperation between researchers.

Scientific Council

The Vulcania Scientific Council comprises ten recognized experts and researchers from Sweden and other countries worldwide. Through their commitment, they will guarantee the quality of the Vulcania research projects.

The task for the Council is to assess and prioritize all the submitted research proposals. The Council is also to secure that the projects conducted by Vulcania maintain a high international standard.
